David J Smith

Sample Programmes

David offers recitals with varied repertoire for any combination of solo organ, harpsichord and recorder. This is a cost effective way of having a mixture of tone colours and repertoire. An example of such a programme is one devised to mark the 450th anniversary of Peter Philips's birth: it takes a musical journey through the composer's eventful life interspersed with organ improvisations in various styles and solo recorder items taken from a manuscript in the National Library of Scotland.

David regularly performs solo organ recitals. Typically an organ recital will include some early seventeenth-century repertoire alongside music by later composers and one or more improvisations, which may be on themes submitted by the audience.

David is an experienced continuo player and versatile accompanist. He recently recorded contemporary Scottish music for bassoon and piano with Lesley Wilson. The sample programme is one with Nicholas Clapton of songs by composers whose anniversaries fell in 2009.
